Lighting is an important factor in any office. Good lighting can encourage productivity while poor lighting can cause eyestrain and drowsiness. Investing in good lighting can not only increase productivity but save on your energy bill. The right type of light bulb is efficient and creates a positive work environment. ServiceMaster Twin Cities compiled the following information to help you make the best decision for your building.
In general, incandescent lighting has a short life span and low efficiency. Halogen lightbulbs are a type of incandescent bulb. They have a regenerative cycle and higher temperatures that give them a longer life and higher efficiency than other types of incandescent bulbs. This type of lighting meets the energy efficiency standard but is not the most efficient option on the market.
Unfortunately, natural lighting isn’t available in every building. When it is, it’s usually reserved for certain offices. If you’re lucky enough to have natural lighting near your workspace, take advantage of it. It’s best if the natural light source is on either the left or right side of your work station. This allows your eyes to have the easiest viewing experience possible, especially when looking at a computer screen all day. In addition to the position of the lighting, determine the brightness and your needs for supplemental lighting. This can include floor lamps, overhead lighting or task lighting. The key is to avoid having too much light.
LEDs are one of the most energy-efficient lightbulbs you can find. They last between 15 to 25 years and use 75% less energy. The upfront cost of LED lightbulbs is higher than both CFL and Incandescent lighting. However, over time the LED lightbulbs are more cost-efficient because you don’t have to change them as often and they use less energy. If your business is prepared for a long-term investment, LED is the way to go. You can choose the light bulb warmth and brightness for even more customization.
CFL stands for compact fluorescent lamps. This type of bulb is less expensive than LED to purchase, they use less electricity than incandescent lighting and can last up to 10 years. Over time, your energy costs would be higher than LED and you’d have to change bulbs more often. While CFL bulbs are a useful middle of the road option when it comes to efficiency, cost and lifespan, they do get hot to the touch and take a few minutes to reach its full brightness when switched on.
