5 Scary Things in Your Office Dirtier than the Toilet

It’s officially the end of the spooky season, so the janitorial experts here at ServiceMaster Twin Cities gathered the top scary things around the office that are dirtier than the toilet. Despite what most think, the toilet seat is not the most bacteria covered item you encounter at work. To celebrate Halloween, here are five frighteningly dirty things around your office:

The Break Room

According to a Kimberly-Clark study, the office breakroom is considered a germ “hot-spot” because of the sink and microwave handles. They are typically the dirtiest spots in today’s office spaces, with 75 percent of break room sink faucets and 48 percent of microwave door handles having an ATP count of 300 or more.

Keyboard and Mouse

Computers have become an important part of day to day office work, which includes your keyboard and mouse. Half of all computer mice were found to have ATP levels above 100 since they gather all of the germs your employees encounter each day. You should be regularly sanitizing your desk space, including the mouse and keyboard, to avoid getting yourself and your coworkers sick.

Phones, both mobile devices and office phones, are considered dirtier than a toilet. Throughout the day we touch our phones countless times and often spit on them while in use. Desk phones are said to have over 25,000 germs per square inch because of how much use it gets. Be sure to regularly wipe down your phone’s handle and receiver to clean off any bacteria.

Your Mug Collection

Coffee mugs can be one of the germiest items in your office, according to a 1997 study. While 90 percent of office mugs are covered in bacteria, around 20 percent of those mugs tested positive for fecal matter. Use your office’s dishwasher to wash your mugs instead of the bacteria-soaked sponges in the sink. If your office doesn’t have one, bring your mug home at the end of each week and run it through the dishwasher.

Work Bags and Purses

Purses and briefcases get carried to and from home to the office each day. Bag handles contain the most bacteria by far, but the interior is also quite dirty. We are constantly throwing items in our bags, from snacks to pens, and rarely clean or sanitize the interior. Don’t set your bag on the ground and regularly clean them with disinfectant wipes and sprays.
